Tom (Michael Fassbender) is a war veteran who once fought on the front lines. Now, he and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) move to a small island in Western Australia, where he becomes the lighthouse keeper. The isolated life on the island strengthens the bond between Tom and Isabel, and they joyfully await the growth of their child in Isabel's womb. One day, an unexpected tragedy causes Isabel to miscarry, plunging her into despair. Then, a boat washes ashore, carrying a dead man and a baby. Overjoyed, Isabel begs Tom to allow her to keep and raise the child. Although this goes against Tom's principles, he eventually agrees.
