Once, America had a tradition of "family feuds," and the McKay and Confield families were two generations locked in deadly conflict. In 1810, John McKay and James Confield shot each other in the rain one night, both dying. John’s widow moved to New York with her younger son to help him escape the feud, while James's father vowed to raise his grandsons to take revenge. Twenty years later, Willy McKay (played by Buster Keaton) has grown up and is returning home to inherit his father's estate. After an eventful and slow train journey, Willy befriends a girl named Virginia. Upon arriving at his destination, Willy visits Virginia's home, only to discover that she is the youngest daughter of the Confield family. Virginia's two brothers, upon learning Willy's identity, plot to harm him, but the tradition of "hospitality" prevents them from acting against him in their home, leading Willy to stay at the Confield house for self-protection…
