In the late Edo period, in the Haisaka domain, a low-ranking samurai named Kiyomasa (Hiroyuki Sanada) takes care of his senile mother and two young daughters after the death of his wife, living on a meager salary. Because he rushes home without participating in social events after work each day, his colleagues jokingly refer to him as "Twilight's Kiyomasa." After Tomoe (Rie Miyazawa), who grew up with Kiyomasa, returns to her parents' home following her divorce, she frequently visits to help care for his mother and daughters, which brings about a lot of gossip.
