On the eve of the 1968 French student protests, twin siblings Isabelle (Eva Green) and Léos (Louis Garrel) become close friends with American exchange student Matthew (Michael Pitt) through film. When the siblings invite Matthew to their home, he wins the affection of their parents, who are both university professors, and gradually, he becomes infatuated with Isabelle. After the protests begin and classes are suspended, the three young people, with nothing to do, start playing games about film directors and scripts in their room. During the game, Isabelle realizes Matthew has feelings for her and, along with Léos, encourages him to make love to her. Thus, while their parents are away on vacation, the three embark on a paradise-like existence, and Matthew slowly discovers that Isabelle and Léos are involved in an incestuous affair, leading to subtle shifts in their relationship, while the lively student protests outside seem irrelevant to them.
