Mario (Massimo Troisi) is the son of a fisherman who does not like the sea, yet he becomes a postman responsible for sending letters on a small island. The island is home to the Chilean poet Neruda (Philippe Noiret) and his wife. Neruda has been exiled to this place; he is skilled at writing poetry and is exceptionally talented. Mario receives and sends many letters from Neruda every day. With frequent contact, Mario grows increasingly fascinated by the poet and is eager to discuss poetry and learn from him. After falling in love with a beautiful girl on the island, Mario often shares his feelings with Neruda and ultimately wins the girl’s heart with poetry, leading them to become a couple. Until Neruda leaves the island, Mario continues to hold on to his love for poetry. He keeps writing poems and plans to read them at a workers' meeting, but faces unexpected disaster.
