In a desolate city, gang members are everywhere. Jack, the accountant for the mafia, has been monitored by them after embezzling their assets and tipping off the police. His family is trapped in their apartment, facing imminent danger. Jack and his wife leave their young son, Phil, in the care of their single neighbor, Gloria (played by Gena Rowlands), but they themselves cannot escape the mafia... As the mafia seeks to recover their money, Gloria, whose identity is not as simple as it seems, steps up to protect the unfamiliar boy.
