Chytilová: The story of Calamity is about a train that stops because of a snow avalanche. I use GCD as a metaphor for the avalanche; people want to break free from their predicament and seek freedom. ... This film was allowed to be made because at that time, an international women's organization questioned the Czech government about why I couldn't make the film. They replied that I could make it, so they let me proceed. I proposed the screenplay for Calamity, and soon they understood the true meaning of the film, and then banned its screening in theaters.
