On the way back from visiting his mother's grave, Shinji (voiced by Megumi Ogata) and Misato Katsuragi (voiced by Kotono Mitsuishi) encounter an attack from the Seventh Angel. At a critical moment, Unit-02 triumphs over the enemy, and Shinji meets its pilot, Asuka Langley Shikinami (voiced by Yuko Miyamura). Unlike the taciturn Rei Ayanami (voiced by Megumi Hayashibara), Asuka is confident and somewhat arrogant, leading to many amusing moments between her and Shinji. The three of them—piloting Unit-00, Unit-01, and Unit-02—resist the fierce attacks of the Eighth Angel, during which subtle feelings begin to blossom in the hearts of these three young individuals. Soon after, the Ninth and Tenth Angels arrive in succession, and Shinji and his friends face a brutal test of life and death... This film is the second installment of the Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition quadrilogy.
