In 1812, Napoleon's army controlled most of the European countries. Among the few that were not conquered, Russia planned to unite with Austria to make a desperate resistance. The ambitious Russian officer, Prince Andrei (played by Mel Ferrer), embodies this spirit. However, Andrei's close friend, Prince Pierre (played by Henry Fonda), is indifferent to the war. He becomes the heir to an inheritance before his father's death and marries the noblewoman Helene (played by Anita Ekberg), only to discover that they are incompatible and separate shortly after marriage. After a failed battle, Andrei is released to visit his wife, who dies in childbirth. Months later, Pierre goes hunting with the Rostov family, inviting Andrei along. Andrei falls in love with the Count's daughter, Natasha (played by Audrey Hepburn), at first sight. Soon, Natasha accepts Andrei's proposal, but Andrei quickly returns to the army. Helene's brother Anatole takes advantage of the situation and tricks Natasha into running away with him. As the Russo-French War begins, Natasha encounters the severely wounded Andrei, who forgives her betrayal before he dies. After the war, Pierre returns to Moscow and ends up with Natasha.
