In the later years of Kangxi's reign, the princes coveted the throne, with the Fourth Prince Yinzhen and the Fourteenth Prince Yinti competing fiercely. Kangxi secretly ordained the Fourteenth Prince as his successor, prompting Yinzhen to command Nian Gengyao to devise a plan to usurp the position from the Fourteenth Prince, while Yinzhen later held the title of Grand General. After assisting Yongzheng in ascending to the throne, Nian was tasked with a campaign to the west, achieving numerous victories and gaining fame, which caused concern for Yongzheng. Seizing the opportunity, Yongzheng demoted Nian Gengyao from Grand General to the position of "Outer Commission Captain" in just one day. Nian conspired with loyalists for a rebellion but was ultimately killed by Yongzheng due to a leak of their plans.
