Professor Higashizawa (played by Eijiroh Higashino) of the First Department of Surgery at Naniwa University is nearing retirement, and the popular associate professor Goro Saizen (played by Jiro Tamaki), known for his outstanding surgical skills, is the strongest candidate for the next professorship. Coming from a poor background, Saizen harbors an extraordinary ambition for fame and fortune, which invokes dissatisfaction from Professor Higashizawa. To hinder Saizen's progress, Higashizawa plans a nationwide selection for his successor. Under immense pressure, Saizen, with the strong financial backing of his father-in-law Ikue Saizen (played by Kenjiro Ishiyama) and the Osaka North District Medical Association, goes all out in a desperate bid for the professorship. Meanwhile, a stomach cancer patient is entrusted to Saizen. However, ignoring the advice of his contemporary Shuji Mii (played by Takahiro Tamura) due to his obsession with the competition for fame and fortune, Saizen conducts the surgery on his own and ultimately finds himself embroiled in a medical accident... This film is adapted from the original work of the same name by Yasunari Kawabata.
