The story takes place in 19th century Berlin, where Heinrich (Christian Friedel) is a young and melancholic poet full of romantic sentiments. Heinrich deeply believes that love can conquer death, and that any obstacles are powerless in the face of true love. He hopes to commit suicide with his beloved cousin Marie (Sandra Hüller) to witness their love, but when faced with death, Marie hesitates. Later, Heinrich encounters a woman named Henriette (Birte Schnoeink), who is a wife to a husband busy with work.
