Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery (Ben Foster) has just returned home injured after completing his deployment in Iraq. Despite having a pleasant day with his girlfriend, Kelly (Jena Malone), they ultimately break up. Due to his incomplete service, Will is reassigned to the "casualty notification" service center under Captain Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson). During their mission to deliver casualty notifications, Will and Tony encounter various situations, including being assaulted and verbally abused by distraught relatives. When informing Olivia Peterson (Samantha Morton) about her husband’s death, Will worries that the strong exterior of the widow may not withstand the news. Afterward, he repeatedly cares for and helps her and her son, and they gradually develop feelings for each other. However, Tony is unhappy with Will's actions that violate the "casualty notification code of conduct," and after a conflict, they finally express the deep emotional pain they've been suppressing. This film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson) and Best Original Screenplay, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Woody Harrelson), and won the Peace Film Award at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay and a nomination for the Golden Bear for Best Film.
