This is a true story about one of the most dramatic transfers of power in nearly 2000 years. Bishop Bergoglio (played by Jonathan Pryce) is deeply disappointed with the direction of the Church and thus applies for retirement in 2012 from Pope Benedict (played by Anthony Hopkins). However, faced with scandals and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his most severe critic and future successor to Rome, where within the walls of the Vatican, a struggle unfolds between tradition and progress, sin and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront their pasts in search of common ground and a future for the world's billion believers.
