The story takes place in England in 1694, where the wealthy Mrs. Hobbart (Janet Suzman) hires the talented painter Neville (Anthony Higgins) under a contract to complete twelve paintings for her estate, Compton Anstey. During this time, an illicit relationship develops between Neville and Mrs. Hobbart. Talmann (Hugh Fraser) is Mrs. Hobbart's son-in-law, who has always hoped to inherit the grand Compton Anstey estate. However, his wife, Mrs. Talmann (Anne-Louise Lambert), has not been able to bear children, making Talmann view the roaming Neville as a thorn in his side. Soon, Mrs. Talmann's name is added to Neville’s list of lovers, and what he does not know is that he has fallen into a long-planned conspiracy.
