Afghan Mohammed (played by Vincent Gallo) encounters three American soldiers in desolate mountains and, in a panic, kills them with the weapon in his hand. Mohammed is subsequently captured by the arriving U.S. military and subjected to interrogation and abuse in an American prison. During transport, the military vehicle crashes, and in the ensuing chaos, Mohammed unexpectedly gains his freedom. He kills passersby in the icy wilderness, steals vehicles and clothing, and kills military dogs while being pursued by American forces. In the desolate forest, Mohammed survives by eating tree bark and fights desperately for survival, occasionally glimpsing the past and strangely sensing future events amid the onslaught of snow and ice. His journey of escape is marked by almost random acts of killing, and the harsh living conditions push him back to a primal state...
