The story takes place during World War II, where the fires of war destroy the homes on which civilians depend for survival. Left with no choice, they embark on a journey of escape. In one enemy bombing, a five-year-old girl named Paulette (Brigitte Fossey) witnesses the death of her parents and beloved dog. In her fear and shock, Paulette finds the corpse of her puppy, and just as she is overcome with grief, a boy named Michel (Georges Poujouly) appears before her. Michel is moved by Paulette's tragic experience and convinces his parents to adopt this poor little girl, even creating a grave for her puppy. However, nothing Michel does can ease Paulette's pain. Seeing her sorrowful expression, he comes up with an idea. The two children collect the bodies of animals that died in the war and set up gravestones for them using stolen crosses. Little do they realize that this act of kindness will ultimately lead to their separation.
