In the early 1980s, a rural girl from Huangshan named Gong Lingling (played by Li Ling) comes to Beijing alone as a nanny to pay off her family's debts. As a newcomer from the countryside, she inevitably faces strange looks from some city folks, and Lingling is no exception. Upon arriving at the Qi family, they constantly distrust her actions, even suspecting her of wrongdoing when she buys groceries. Despite working hard every day, she fails to earn the owner's praise. Eventually, after the loss of a sweater, Lingling cannot bear the humiliation and leaves the Qi household in the rain. She then goes to the Zhao family to care for the new mother, Liu Hongrong (played by Zhao Yamin), and they quickly bond like sisters due to their similar fate. Soon, Liu is abandoned by her husband, and their financial struggles leave her unable to pay Lingling's salary, forcing Lingling to leave. After being introduced by a fellow villager, she eventually finds her way to the Zhou family, who treat her as one of their own.
