The story takes place in the bustling metropolis of New York, where life is anything but easy for the young girl Meggie (Onata Aprile). Meggie's mother, Susanna (Julianne Moore), is a faded rock star who, now aging and unattractive, is consumed by sadness and trapped in a cycle of anger. Susanna's husband, Bill (Steve Coogan), is a neurotic art dealer, and their marriage has long been a mere formality, with Meggie's presence preventing them from letting go. As divorce seems inevitable, the battle for Meggie's custody becomes the top priority for both Susanna and Bill. They even bring in Lincoln (Alexander Skarsgård) and Margo (Joanna Vanderham) as new partners to strengthen their bargaining power. In the household, everyone is fighting, yet no one cares about Meggie's true feelings, except for Lincoln and Margo.
