The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by John Williams, telling the story of Andrews, a young man who dropped out of Harvard in 1873. Influenced by the natural philosophies of Emerson and Thoreau, he arrives in Butcher's Crossing, driven by a quest for beauty, hope, and vitality. He follows the hunter Miller (played by Cage) and two others (the skinner Schneider and the camp laborer Charlie Hoge) into the Colorado mountains to hunt buffalo. Each of them embarks on this uncertain journey with different purposes and thoughts. They face numerous difficulties and lose one person's life before returning to Butcher's Crossing, where drastic changes have taken place.
