British diplomat Peter Jones (played by Anthony Higgins) lives with his wife Margaret (Charlotte Rampling) and son Nelson (Christopher Hovik) in the embassy in Paris. Peter becomes suspicious when his wife frequently goes out, and through a detective, he discovers Margaret is renting an apartment elsewhere and follows her. He finds his wife lying with a gorilla named Max. Peter initially wants to kill the gorilla, but ultimately brings it home. However, Max’s ambiguous relationship with Margaret leaves him feeling bewildered... This is a foreign film directed by Japanese New Wave director Nagisa Oshima.
