In 1945, the Nationalist and Communist armies fought for control of Pingyuan County in Shandong. Nationalist 45th Brigade squad leader Yu Chengshan and soldiers Tuga and Cao Gen were captured by the 36th Regiment of the Eighth Route Army. Brigade commander Liao Gaoxuan sent a special forces team to rescue Yu Chengshan but failed. Japan surrendered, and Cao Gen and Tuga were willing to genuinely join the Eighth Route Army, but Yu still wanted to return to the Nationalist forces. While the 36th Regiment was advancing northeast, Yu Chengshan and Tuga sneaked away to rescue Zhang Ying, the director of the Women's Rescue Association. Liao Gaoxuan led the 45th Division to capture Yizhou, where Yu Chengshan rescued the seriously injured regiment commander Wang Beifeng. The 36th Regiment was upgraded to a division, and Wang Beifeng ordered Yu to cause trouble in Fucheng, where the Nationalist 15th Division was stationed, to help capture Beishun City.
