Francis Ford Coppola's "Metropolis" is adapted from the ancient Roman historical work "The Catiline Conspiracy," focusing on an imagined New York set in an anachronistic time between ancient Rome and the roaring 1920s, while also embodying the characteristics of modern New York. The city is on the brink of disaster, with two opposing forces having different visions for its future: Mayor Cicero represents the conservative perspective, holding traditional views on the city's development; while a reformist architect, Catiline, hopes to establish a utopia within the city. Caught between these two powerful figures is a young woman, Julia, the Mayor’s daughter, who falls in love with Catiline. The roots of the "Metropolis" project can be traced back to 1984, when Coppola wrote nearly 400 pages of the script, but his production company American Zoetrope went bankrupt, leaving the film's pre-production in limbo. In 2001, Coppola attempted to restart the project but was met with the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks while shooting footage in New York, leading investors to shy away from a film about the city’s disaster. In recent years, many had given up hope, believing Coppola would never make the film... but now he is back. Seeing actors in stunning costumes on set feels surreal: is this really happening? Will the utopian Metropolis be realized in our current comic book-dominated era? Filming began in November 2022 and is scheduled to continue until March 2023, provided all goes smoothly. An additional year will be dedicated to post-production, including editing and visual effects, thus the film is expected to be released in 2024. Most of the scenes will be shot in a special effects studio in Georgia. For the aging Coppola, this offers a relatively easy environment, allowing us to witness his long-held dream regarding studios take root in a new generation. The script for "Metropolis" has been honed for nearly 40 years, and considering its maturity, we are filled with hope. Its inherent political ambition is also set to change Hollywood. What style will Coppola choose for this film? Will it reflect the darkness, solemnity, and ritualistic quality of "The Godfather" trilogy? Or will it be smooth, colorful, and exhilarating like "The Rainmaker"? Coppola believes "Metropolis" will be a culmination of the styles from all his works.
