The story takes place in Czechoslovakia in 1983, where Marie (played by Zuzana Maurery) is a newly appointed teacher at a primary school. Her extremely strict approach and authoritarian ruling style quickly get her into trouble shortly after she arrives at the school. Marie is very harsh with her students, even resorting to corporal punishment. She vents her emotions without restraint, completely disregarding her identity as a teacher, simply because she has powerful connections and flexible social skills. In the wake of a sensational student suicide incident influenced by Marie, the principal decides that he can no longer stand idly by; he joins forces with the parents' committee in an attempt to curtail Marie's power. But it is clear that the kind yet somewhat weak principal is no match for Marie.
