In the second year of Xianfeng (1852), the beautiful Yehenara Yuylan (Liu Xiaoqing) was selected to enter the palace and was conferred the title of Noble Consort. Due to a historical feud between the Yehenara and Aisin Gioro families, Yuylan initially did not win the favor of Xianfeng (Liang Jiahui). However, through her clever schemes, she eventually bound Xianfeng with a sorrowful and lingering tune and her stunning beauty, and was promoted to the rank of Consort Yi. After giving birth to a son, Zai Chun, she was then elevated to the position of Noble Consort Yi, making her status unmatched except by the Empress (Chen Ye). As the consorts in the Qing palace vied for favor, and Xianfeng indulged in pleasure, foreign powers like England and France, having coveted Qing Dynasty's wealth for a long time, repeatedly invaded China. The cowardly Xianfeng was persuaded by the Eight Ministers to abandon the world-renowned Summer Palace, known as the "Garden of Gardens," and under the pretense of an "autumn hunt," he escaped to the Rehe Palace with various consorts, continuing his extravagant life of "ignoring outside affairs, living only for immediate pleasure."
