In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, during a chaotic time, the Liulichang area of old Beijing still thrived. Tong Fengquan (played by Zhang Guoli), the owner of Fan Gu Tang, is an old antique dealer skilled in restoration and aging, but this business is rife with deception and pitfalls. Even someone as shrewd as Tong Fengquan struggles to avoid being trapped in schemes and mutual betrayals. Due to a Ru kiln three-footed box, two antique shops go under, causing casualties and leaving Tong penniless.
