The September 18 Incident leads to the fall of Northeast China. Bi Lian’s father, Zhao Yisheng, along with Bai Qianshan and teacher Jiang Feng, actively organized anti-Japanese armed action, helping local resistance forces to blow up the Japanese-Manchurian Railway. As a result, Bi Lian's family was brutally purged by the Japanese army, and her father was killed.
