In the mid-1980s, America was under the conservative regime of Reagan and was experiencing a crisis due to AIDS. "Angels in America" tells the story of a group of New Yorkers navigating the realms of life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell, struggling to survive in this societal context. Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" is considered one of the most important plays of the past few decades. The play is divided into two parts, with a total runtime of over seven hours, and premiered at the Royal National Theatre in London from 1992 to 1993, winning multiple awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play is both entertaining and moving, sharp and deeply insightful, exploring themes of love, pain, illness, death, faith, and politics in imaginative ways that remain thought-provoking even 25 years later. The cast for this revival is star-studded, featuring leading actors from Hollywood and the British theatre scene. Andrew Garfield, who plays the lead role of Prior, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor and is known for films like "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Hacksaw Ridge." Other principal actors include Denise Gough, who stars in the BBC series "Paula," James McArdle from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Russell Tovey from the National Theatre's "The History Boys," and Nathan Lane from the musical "The Producers" and the film "The Birdcage." The director of the play, Marianne Elliott, is a dual Olivier and Tony Award winner. She has directed successful productions such as "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and "War Horse" at the National Theatre. This time, she has crafted a deeply moving anthem of humanity for us.
