In the 1930s in the Central Plains. In Jiangli Village, there lived a reasonable man named Yang Baishun, whose name "Baishun" translates to "smooth sailing," yet he faced troubles in everything he did. Grinding tofu, slaughtering pigs, dyeing cloth, and fetching water, Yang Baishun found no success in any trade, but only the foreign barber pastor Old Zhan and the widow Wu Xiangxiang understood him. During the grand festival in Yan Jin, Baishun performed exceptionally well and became famous, winning the heart of Qin Manqing, the daughter of the headmaster of the new school in Yan Jin.
