Jiang Lingyu (played by Bai Yang), a female student from a university in Shanghai, lives with her aunt. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance, despite her family's objections, she resolutely joins the anti-Japanese drama troupe to promote the cause at the front lines. Alongside her is the passionate musician Gao Libin (played by Tao Jin), and the two gradually fall in love. As the war progresses, the drama troupe finds itself in Chongqing, where her cousin Zhou Jiarong (played by Gao Zheng) is engaging in speculative business and becomes entangled with Jiang Lingyu, who rejects him. After the victory in the war, Zhou Jiarong, who has become a "reception official," profits from the national disaster, while the married Jiang Lingyu and Gao Libin find themselves impoverished and struggling. Fortunately, an old friend, Xia Guangyuan (played by Shi Yu), helps them by renting a small room. Prolonged hardships and malnutrition lead to Gao Libin falling ill with tuberculosis. Concerned about the country's future, Lingyu, despite being pregnant, writes fervently, exposing the dirty faces of the "reception officials." Ultimately, her physical strength gives out, and she collapses in the street...
