Philip (Gregory Peck) is a journalist who comes to the bustling city of New York with his son Tommy (Dean Stockwell) and his mother (Anne Revere), eager to make a significant impact. His boss assigns him a task to write a series of articles about the anti-Semitism that exists in America. To better complete this task, Philip decides to impersonate a Jew to experience firsthand the feelings and circumstances of being Jewish. What Philip did not expect was that this action created a rift between him and his girlfriend, Kathy (Dorothy McGuire), and his son faced exclusion and bullying from peers because of his father's false identity. After experiencing various setbacks and difficulties, Philip successfully completes the task, but deep down, he does not feel at ease.
