The story takes place in post-World War II Italy, where the damage inflicted by the war on the country and its people is incalculable. The pain and destruction caused in a short period require a much longer time to heal. In such a tumultuous era, the shadows of a group of innocent children flit about; they are the little shoe shiners, including Pasquale (Franco Interlenghi) and Giuseppe (Rinaldo Smordoni). Giuseppe's brother is a troublemaker, and under his coercion and temptation, Giuseppe and Pasquale use their hard-earned money to join a scam gang. The police arrest Giuseppe and Pasquale, and driven by a scheme of deceit, Pasquale reveals the main culprit and his gang, leading to the arrest of Giuseppe's brother. Although the crime has been punished, the childhood of the two children is forever overshadowed.
