The lonely carpenter grandpa made a wooden puppet boy—Pinocchio—by hand one evening. Perhaps heaven favored grandpa; at midnight, the Blue Fairy appeared and gave this puppet boy consciousness, enabling him to run and jump like other boys. Pinocchio, thrilled to have gained life, quickly made friends with the little animals in the house. When grandpa woke up in the morning and saw Pinocchio, he was amazed and very grateful for the gift that heaven had bestowed upon him. However, Pinocchio soon discovered that he was different from the other boys; he had no flesh, could not feel pain, and only had a cold wooden body. He began to feel dissatisfied with his existence and dreamed of finding the Blue Fairy to transform him completely into a real boy. Thus, he set off on a journey.
