In New York's Chinatown, an outspoken, chain-smoking octogenarian grandmother, who recently lost her husband, is determined to start a new life as an independent woman. However, her son is worried and hopes she'll move to an upscale neighborhood in Brooklyn to live with his family. A fortune teller living near the grandmother's home predicts that her future luck will be overwhelming, prompting her to hop on a bus straight to a casino. She loses at the gambling table, but on the way home, a large bag of money mysteriously falls into her lap, and she decides to take it home. This incident catches the attention of the local mob, forcing the grandmother to hire a bodyguard for her protection, which embroils her in the local gang conflicts.
