The story follows Sister Clodagh, a nun from a convent in Kolkata, India, who is assigned as the head of a convent in the high mountains of Napal at an altitude of 8000 feet, where strong winds blow year-round. Clodagh establishes a school and a hospital, attracting even young generals for education. Although Clodagh works diligently to develop the convent amidst dire circumstances, the young nuns, relying solely on self-discipline in the remote mountains, find their spirits challenged by the beautiful but isolating environment. Faced with constant temptations, some are unable to resist and must abandon their holy vows. As the wise say, only saints and laypeople may thrive—because in nature, one can either cultivate oneself or drift along with the tide. Later, incidents such as the death of a child and Sister Ruth’s struggle with love, leading her to attempt to kill the abbess and fall into a deep valley, result in Clodagh leaving the Napal convent to heal her own wounds. Related Comments Directed by Michael Powell, the film showcases the undeniable fact that human nature can be altered by environmental influences. When humanity is fragile, it cannot resist the pressures brought by the environment nor the self-restraint needed to combat external influences. The film meticulously portrays the internal struggles of the characters, and the actors interpret various roles with great proficiency.
