The story takes place in an industrial town in 1979, where a series of deaths due to leukemia cause widespread panic among the residents. Everyone knows that the two large factories in town, which discharge wastewater all day, are connected to these tragedies. In the face of such a huge industrial system, individuals feel so insignificant, but despite this, after losing her life, Annie (Kathleen Quinlan) resolutely decides to team up with eight victim families in the town to sue the two factories. No lawyer is willing to take on such a difficult case due to its low chances of success and the potential trouble it could cause, except for one person: Jan Schlichtmann (John Travolta). Jan spends a significant amount of time and resources investigating the daily discharges of the two factories. After he gathers conclusive evidence, he loses the case due to the defendant's underhanded tactics, resulting in Jan losing everything: his money, family, and reputation, but he does not give up.
