A transformed Atayal person named A-Ming, unable to resolve his sense of belonging, returns to his childhood hometown with intentions of suicide but is saved by an Atayal elder who then places him in a riverside chicken coop. The elder's son, A-Jiang, dreams of making it big in Taipei, while the elder insists on staying in the village, resulting in a silent conflict between them. A beautiful woman named Xiumei, filled with urban influences, deceives a wealthy landlord and escapes back to the village to find a husband. The lifelong partner she seeks is none other than her close childhood friend A-Jiang, accelerating his struggle to leave home. The wealthy landlord from Taipei, cheated by Xiumei, sends two brothers from the underworld to the village to find her. Xiumei, pursued and with nowhere to hide, ends up spending a night in A-Ming's chicken coop. A-Jiang, jealous of Xiumei’s relationship with A-Ming, drives him to a desolate cave. In the cave, A-Ming observes bats dwelling there and gains enlightenment about life, while also learning a secret about his biological father from the Atayal elder.
