Edward (played by Johnny Depp) is a robot with a human mind and a pair of scissors for hands, living a lonely existence in a castle. A cosmetics saleswoman named Peg breaks into the castle and takes him home, introducing him to the human world. Innocent Edward falls in love with Peg's daughter Kim (played by Winona Ryder), who gradually becomes attracted to Edward's kindness. However, a series of unexpected events turn the neighbors' attitudes from affection to rejection. Edward painfully discovers that he always ends up causing trouble despite his good intentions, and he cannot even embrace his beloved. Perhaps he is destined to never belong to this world.
