The story begins in 2000 in England, where Joan (played by Judi Dench) enjoys a pleasant retirement in the picturesque countryside. Although Joan appears to be simply an elegant and dignified elderly lady, her true identity is that of a military spy. One day, an agent from MI5 knocks on Joan's door, shattering her peaceful life. Time rewind to 1930, when Joan (played by Sophie Cookson) is a physics student at Cambridge University. By chance, she meets a Russian man named Leo (played by Tom Hughes), and the two quickly fall in love at first sight. Under Leo's influence, Joan begins to take an interest in the global dynamics and realizes that history has reached a turning point, with military hegemony already infiltrating every aspect of her life. Angered, Joan decides to resist.
