The story takes place in a village in Denmark with a strong religious atmosphere. The farmer Bogen has three sons; the eldest is skeptical of religion and rebellious in nature, while the youngest is dating a girl of a different faith. The protagonist, the middle brother, believes he is Jesus and is considered crazy by everyone, as he became mentally unstable after the death of his fiancée, despite originally studying theology. However, one day the middle brother begins to "show signs," bringing the dead back to life, and his sanity starts to return.
