A 1987 work by Peter Greenaway, nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Production Design at the British Academy Awards; a Cannes competition film. The director, coming from a painting background, naturally imbues his works with a unique and colorful visual style. American architect Stourley Kracklite and his pregnant young wife Louisa arrive in Rome to organize an exhibition in honor of the imaginative 18th-century French architect Etienne-Louis Boullée. However, Kracklite is tormented by a stomach ailment, while Louisa shares flirtatious glances with the suave young architect Caspasian Speckler, who is the exhibition's sponsor. The film has a special focus on bellies—the architect's ill belly and the pregnant wife's belly, with their round shapes reminiscent of the domed structures designed by Boullée...
