Malik (played by Antonin Stahly-Vishwanadan), an architect born in Tunisia and raised in France, returns to his homeland due to his father's funeral. Amidst mixed emotions, his mother inevitably starts plotting for her son's lifelong happiness. However, Malik is attracted to men—this open secret becomes the greatest barrier between mother and son. When he falls for Bilal, a handyman from his mother's house (played by Salim Kechiouche), a direct confrontation becomes unavoidable. Malik has a childhood nightmare where he imagines a white silk thread attached to him. This thread comes from his mother, reminding him, restraining him, and binding him, making his life difficult. Yet he doesn't realize that the white silk thread is also a bond of family and love. The film is beautiful, with the fresh North African coast portrayed like a picturesque painting. There is little negativity or darkness; both love and familial ties are portrayed as passionate and clear. Claudia Cardinale, the mother in the film, is a national treasure of Italy who was once rated among the world's 50 most beautiful women. She vividly portrays a mother who is sharp yet soft-hearted, critical yet forgiving. The ending, where Malik teaches his son to swim and ultimately lets go of the silk thread, leaves the audience with a sense of nostalgia and release.
