The story takes place in 16th century Spain, where Spain and England are locked in fierce battles. Captain Richard of the English fleet (played by Lyn Harding) and his son Michael (played by Laurence Olivier) are captured by local forces. However, Richard has been long-time friends with Spanish Admiral Vardes (played by Charles Carson), who takes Michael to his home, while Richard dies under enemy fire. At Vardes' home, Michael meets Vardes' daughter Cynthia (played by Vivien Leigh), who admires the handsome and capable Michael. However, Michael, filled with anger towards the enemy, returns to England to pledge his loyalty to the Queen. Subsequently, Michael adopts a disguise and infiltrates Spain on a covert mission, staying at the home of Hillary (played by James Mason), only to find himself encountering Cynthia, who has now become Hillary's wife.
