In 1930s India, women had no rights or freedom; they merely existed as subordinates to men. The 8-year-old girl Chuyia (played by Sarala) becomes a widow at a young age, forced to shave her head and spend the rest of her long life in a courtyard designated for widows. In this yard, young women resemble celestial beings, while emaciated old women are half-buried in dust, and shrewd women scheme to earn unjust profits. What will tomorrow hold for Chuyia? What future awaits this unfortunate woman? This film is the third part of Indian female director Deepa Mehta's "Elemental Trilogy," which won Best Film at the 2006 Bangkok International Film Festival; three awards at the 2006 Genie Awards in Canada for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Actress (Seema Biswas); Best Performance at the 2006 National Society of Film Critics Awards; the Youth Jury Award at the 2005 Valladolid International Film Festival; Best Actress (Lisa Ray) and Best Director at the 2006 Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards; and Best Young Actor Award (Sarala) at the 2007 Young Artist Awards.
