Batty (Chris Marquette) has a father who is a police officer responsible for managing this area, and being a police officer here means facing the threat of death at all times. One day, Batty witnesses his father being attacked by a gang and dying in front of him. In his anger, the boy vows to avenge his father, and ultimately does kill his enemy. Batty also has a younger brother, Jacob (Anton Yelchin), who became his only support after their father's death. Batty works tirelessly to earn money just to support Jacob's violin studies and eventually send him abroad for further training. Years pass quickly, and when Jacob finally returns home after completing his studies, he finds that his brother Batty has changed beyond recognition.
