The film focuses on the changes in square dancing in Chinese society from the Cultural Revolution to today, tracing the current popular square dance back to the "Zhong" dance of the Cultural Revolution period. The three protagonists are Mr. Zhou, who dared to resist during the Cultural Revolution and can still do a handstand at the age of 74; Mr. Xiong, whose marriage is on the brink of collapse and who cares for his 105-year-old father daily, continuing to seek superficial sexual stimulation through changing female dance partners to relieve the psychological pressure of caregiving, ultimately saying a quiet goodbye to his father; and Ms. Yin, a 63-year-old Red Guard leader, who reflects on her youthful naïveté and regrets her extreme leftist tendencies, ultimately achieving her lifelong dream through her continuous efforts, culminating in a dance performance in Los Angeles, USA. All three of them danced the "Zhong" dance during the Cultural Revolution and are active participants in square dance today, striving to realize their final dreams. The film connects them through square dancing, portraying the changes in dance on the square as a dramatic microcosm of nearly 50 years of historical transformation in China. The documentary DANCE ON THE SQUARE tells the story of the 3 heroes who dance on the square from the period Cultural Revolution to today. They are old enough now.
