A shepherd from Corinth saves an abandoned baby and presents him to a childless king. As time passes, the baby grows up to be named Oedipus (Franco Citti). One day, a witch tells Oedipus the myth of Apollo, saying that he will one day kill his biological father and marry his biological mother. After hearing this, Oedipus decides to leave and wander. On his journey, he gets into a fight with a group of people and accidentally kills an old man, who turns out to be his biological father. He then continues his wandering and arrives in Thebes, where he kills a monster with the body of a man and the head of a lion, and marries Queen Jocasta (Silvana Mangano), who is actually his biological mother. The prophecy of Apollo comes true. Soon after, a plague begins to spread in Thebes, and the people search for the murderer of the old king. Oedipus eventually learns the whole truth.
