In the early Meiji era, the strong-willed Ami (played by Yūki Amami) is sent back home after being divorced. At the arrangement of her brother, she remarries Iwajirō (played by Katsuhisa Namase), the owner of Suzuki Store in Kobe, which specializes in sugar. Unlike the miserly and harsh demeanor of the owner, Ami's gentle approach to dealing with people earns her the affection of the employees, among whom Kaneko Naoyoshi (played by Shun Oguri) from Tosa sees her as a mentor in life. After Iwajirō's death, Ami decides to continue running the Suzuki Store, relying on and trusting Naoyoshi, whom she sees as the helmsman of the store. Naoyoshi, who is given great responsibility, showcases his talents. Although he initially stumbles in the camphor business, he later fully demonstrates his abilities in the subsequent business endeavors. Overcoming the turbulent eras of Meiji and Taisho, the sales performance of Suzuki Store soars, making it a leading comprehensive enterprise.
