Aron (played by Hou Hsiao-hsien) is a shop owner and a former star of the youth baseball team, and he has been childhood friends with Ah-Jeng (played by Tsai Chin). Ah-Jeng is a senior assistant at a company; she always dreams of getting married and immigrating to the United States as soon as possible to change her current living situation and yearns for a brighter future. Aron enjoys helping others, like his friend A-Chin (played by Wu Nien-jen), who drives a taxi. He has a strong sense of nostalgia and often goes to watch games at the baseball field. Facing a rapidly changing society, Aron and Ah-Jeng start to drift apart as they socialize with different circles, leading to cracks in their relationship. Later, Aron is stabbed by a young man who has feelings for Ah-Jeng and sits alone on the side of the road waiting. As he gradually loses consciousness, he seems to see memories of participating in youth baseball competitions once again.
