In 1944, as World War II approached its end and the Axis powers faced certain defeat, the world was about to usher in a dawn of peace. However, in Japan, many passionate patriotic youths rushed to the battlefield from which there would be no return. A young teacher, Masahira Shirakawa (played by Sho Sakurai), felt proud to enlist for a noble cause. In his last class before departure, he encouraged his students to head to the battlefront and sacrifice themselves for their country, and his fervent speeches and military songs changed many people’s destinies. After the war, Shirakawa returned to his homeland, having lost an arm in the South Seas, only to be met with desolation and ruin; the lives of the common people were filled with hardships, and they would do anything to survive, while former enemy Americans appeared as saviors on their home soil. He was invited to teach at his former school, but the profound changes in the era and prevailing ideologies led Shirakawa to experience a painful storm of the soul... This film is the first part of a three-night special "Blackboard."
